Ce qui devait n'être qu'une préface à la traduction de Shakespeare par le fils, François-Victor Hugo, devient grâce au père un véritable traité sur le génie, paru en 1864. À partir d'une dynastie qui comprend Homère, Eschyle, Dante, Rabelais ou encore Cervantès, Hugo élabore une théorie et une nouvelle histoire, celle des génies, qui remplace celle des généraux et des tyrans. Il les présente dans un récit poétique d'idées, d'une forme si originale qu'on ne la retrouve que chez Nietzsche, Péguy, Valéry ou Malraux.
C'est aussi l'occasion pour Hugo, en exil à Guernesey, de dresser un bilan du Romantisme - en faisant, à peine déguisée, son autobiographie intellectuelle - et d'annoncer la modernité littéraire. Livre-monstre, d'une érudition folle, William Shakespeare est surtout l'hommage rendu par Hugo à l'éternité de l'art et à l'immortalité des créateurs.
